A Handmade Christmas at Trove

Christmas shopping at Trove
Christmas shopping at Trove

Sometimes the spirit of Christmas can seem a bit hidden by commercialism, endless advertising and mass-produced junk. We race around looking for gifts, end up buying what every one else does, and get driven mad by Christmas muzak and other people crazily racing! Or maybe that’s just me!

But it doesn’t have to be like that.

Christmas shopping at Trove is a TOTALLY different experience. Everything at Trove has been hand made with love and enthusiasm by talented local artists who are sharing some of themselves with each thing they create.  There is a wide range of very different and often unique pieces. Trove is full of little (and big!) works of art that you can wear, share, use to decorate your home, and certainly to express your love and Christmas greetings with.

Opening Hours

From Monday to Saturday each week one of the artists is in the store and will be happy to help you find the perfect gift. Or gifts!  We are open 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and open late on Friday until 8pm.

From Monday, 10th December, we will be extending our hours for your shopping convenience.

Christmas Opening Hours will be:

Monday - 10am - 7pm
Tuesday - 10am - 7pm
Wednesday - 10am - 7pm
Thursday - 10am - 7pm
Friday - 10am - 8pm
Saturday - 10am - 4pm

Friday, 21st December will be our last trading day before Christmas. We will be open until 8pm.

Christmas Themed Items

Many of us are creating beautiful Christmas themed art which will be on display from November until it is snapped up by the Christmas early birds.

Free Gift Wrapping

Free gift wrapping will be available from 10 December. We will wrap your gifts so all you have to do is pop them under the tree.

Gift Hampers

For those really special people in your life, why not create your own beautiful hamper entirely from locally hand made gifts? We have baskets in a range of sizes and can help you to create a very special gift.

Treat yourself to a peaceful Christmas

Make preparing for Christmas this year a gentle, peaceful experience. Your loved ones will appreciate receiving gifts that have been chosen with care and hand made with love.

We look forward to helping you find the perfect gift for your loved ones this Christmas, a gift created with love right here in Canberra. Visit our Shop Location & Hours page if you are a first time visitor. Over there we give you all the details you need to find our beautiful shop.

Trove Workshops for DESIGN Canberra

Trove Canberra is very excited to be partnering with DESIGN Canberra Festival again this year. Trove members will be leading seven interactive and intimate workshops on all the things they have learned running their creative businesses.

Ever wondered how you might price the things you make? Is wordpress a total mystery to you? Not sure what a hashtag is or if you need one? Whatever your question, we have a workshop to help answer it. We'll also be holding a Q&A session with four of our members, so we can answer all the questions you never knew who to ask.

The workshops are:

Instagram can be a great way to promote your handmade products and connect with the community, but it can be confusing at first. Bring along your smart phone to get set up and get started!

7 November: A Beginners' Guide to Selling on Etsy

Do you make gorgeous handmade items? Are they accumulating in your cupboard now that EVERY one of your friends and family have one? Is it time to dip your toe into the world of online selling but you have NO clue where to start? Or maybe you have opened your shop and since then, well .... crickets. Then this workshop is for you. Trove Canberra member Rebecca of Blue Radish will help you learn how to open your Etsy shop, create a listing, write titles, tags and descriptions that will get your item found, level up your photography for selling online and more.

8 November: Pricing Handmade Products

Unsure how to price your handmade products, and what they are really worth? You are not alone! Trove Canberra member, Theresa from ‘a little bird made me’ invites you to learn about the theory and techniques for pricing handmade. Feel free to bring along some of your work so we can consider an example together.

Trove Canberra member Kellyanne of Lex and Lou would like to invite you to learn what she knows now that she didn't know when she started. It's been 2 years since Kellyanne's passion for making clothes for her daughter turned from a hobby into a small business. Learn what to do - and what not to do - as you begin your handmade journey.

20 November: Getting Ready For Your First Market

Selling at a market can be a great way to get your product out there, connect with your customer and build your brand. But there’s a few things you should know before you start. Trove Canberra members Katrina of Little Red Lullaby and Kellyanne of Lex and Lou will give you the lowdown on how to get ready, what you will need, getting your display right and what to do on the day.

21 November: Getting Started On WordPress

If you have a beautiful product to promote, you need a home on the web. Maybe you have been dreaming of creating your own gorgeous website but the "behind-the-scenes" of the online world is all a mystery to you. Maybe you've heard that it is expensive or that you have to be 'technically minded' or need to know HTML. In this workshop Trove Canberra member Rebecca of Blue Radish will bust these myths and show you how WordPress can be a cost effective and accessible way to build yourself an online presence. We'll step through how to do it from the very beginning.

Hidden gem still shining in the heart of Civic

Hidden Gem Trove Canberra still shining in heart of Civic
Hidden Gem Trove Canberra still shining in heart of Civic

It’s clear there’s a building boom and expansion happening in Canberra. Many older buildings are being knocked down to be transformed into modern new entities. There’s talk around town that Garema Centre, home to Trove Canberra, is set for demolition and redevelopment by Geocon. It is true that Geocon have bought the Garema Centre. However, no official notice has yet been given to tenants of the Garema Centre, so it’s business as usual for all. Trove Canberra is still open 6 days a week, serving up an exotic mix of handcrafted gifts, homewares, fashion, jewellery and mouth-watering chocolates by local artisans and designers, all proudly Australian made.

Trove Canberra is not only a gift shop but a community of like-minded people, offering casual monthly meetups with Create With Trove (byo craft and enjoy a cuppa) and regular workshops where you can learn new creative skills in a friendly atmosphere. Trove Canberra also supports local events in Civic with participating groups, such as World Knit in Public Day, Share The Dignity helping women in need, among others. The store is staffed by the members, so you will meet a maker every time you visit.

Enigma Fine Chocolates in Trove Canberra

Trove Canberra Cooperative was established in 2014 by a group of Canberra region crafts-people, brought together through the Canberra Etsy sellers group. It was registered as a not-for-profit cooperative and set up its first store in the (now demolished) Lonsdale Street Traders in Braddon in August 2014.

Fast-forward four years, and Trove Canberra is a thriving, creative community of 30+ makers who have big plans for the future. Moving from their Gold Creek site and opening a new Civic store in May 2016 marked the beginning of an exciting period of growth for Trove. As the co-op continues to grow, it becomes a mecca for tourists needing a unique reminder of their visit to Canberra, as well as locals wanting original items made with love from the makers’ heart and soul.

Trove Canberra can be found at Shop 13, Level 1, Garema Centre, 70 Bunda St in Canberra City (get directions here). Our opening hours are 10am – 4pm Monday to Saturday, until 8pm on Fridays. Trove Canberra Co-operative turns Four

Trove Canberra Turns FourIt’s our Birthday

August 2018 marks four years since the opening of Trove Canberra, and what a journey it has been. Trove began when a group of local Canberra designers started talking about how opening a shop front would be a wonderful way to bring their wares to the community. “My idea was a pop up shop for a month or two with other local designers I had met through Etsy”, says Theresa from A Little Bird Made Me. “After the initial idea started moving and I had had some early input, I had to pull out of Trove for family reasons. The rest of the group went on to create this amazing venture that has supported, launched and promoted so many local artists and designers over the last 4 years. What an achievement! The fact that I can now be a member of Trove is testament to the hard work that they put in to establish the cooperative in a sustainable way.”

When Trove first opened its doors in 2014 at Lonsdale Street Traders in Braddon, it was home to 7 designers. This was always a temporary location due to redevelopment of the area. The shop then migrated to Gold Creek Village, which we soon outgrew, and then moved on to the bustling Bunda Street in Civic. Today we have flourished to a vibrant community of 30 members, supporting one another in business and bringing an array of handmade goodies to the Canberra community.

Trove is a community

“I love having the support of a great group of people who understand the struggles of having a small creative business.” – Jade of Sovata

“The annual world wide knit in public day has been a real highlight for me. I love meeting other makers in Canberra and being part of the community. Each year it just gets bigger. I can’t wait to see how big it will be next year!” – Kristen of The Granny Square Conspiracy

Trove is a place to learn

“It is great as a member of Trove to have a space to run workshops. Workshops are a nice extra source of income for me and I love the opportunity it gives Canberrans to have fun learning a new skill”. – Rebecca of Blue Radish

Canberra Business News reviews Trove: A guide to gorgeous

A guide to Gorgeous Canberra Business News reviews Trove

A guide to Gorgeous Canberra Business News reviews TroveCanberra Business News recently wrote a great article about Trove Canberra. We are flattered and delighted. Thank you Canberra Business News and Lighthouse Innovations for the fabulous write-up. Here’s some of what they had to say…

A Guide to Gorgeous – The Trove Story

Whether you’re a creative looking for a community or a connoisseur in search of a unique, high quality handmade gift; Trove is the place to go. A local co-operative of makers, designers and artists who all live within a hundred kilometres of Canberra; Trove provides a beautiful city retail outlet, open six days a week.

What is so special about buying handmade?

Visiting Trove is not just about the products, it’s an experience in its own right. The store is staffed by the members, so you will meet a maker every time you visit. When you buy a handmade item, you are buying something unique. It is impossible for two handmade products to be the same.
Handmade items have patina and providence. You see the maker’s marks, fingerprints in the ceramics, chisel marks in the timber, the stitches and brushstrokes. To give a handmade gift suggests a certain amount of thought and motivation and tells the recipient how much they are appreciated. Giving handmade, is giving love and a piece of the makers heart and soul.

Be an Angel This Christmas

A Colourful Journey Christmas Angels

Trove Christmas Charity Fundraiser

A Colourful Journey

Women of SammunatWhile Trove is all about supporting the local community and local makers, we also strongly believe in supporting those with fewer opportunities, especially at Christmas. This December, Trove has chosen to support the wonderful initiative – A Colourful Journey – set up by local Polymer Clay Artist Wendy Moore. This program raises money to assist abused women in Nepal with housing, legal assistance and training. Trove is participating through the sale of these gorgeous Christmas angels, all handmade by women in Sammunat, Nepal. 100% of the money raised goes directly to the charity.

Wendy started the initiative while living in Nepal and now travels back several times a year to contribute to the project. She taught the women the art of Polymer Clay bead and jewellery making as well as the techniques used to make the angels. Wendy also runs these courses for us here in Canberra, and has involved many other Canberra makers in sharing their skills, including our own Cindy from The World Rocks, Janice from Stonecrest  Creations and Lex from Sculptural Emanations.

The angels will be on sale at Trove, Level 1, Garema Place, 70 Bunda Street, Canberra throughout the month of December. Stocks are limited so come in quick and support this great cause.

Please read more about this worthwhile project on A Colourful Journey’s website here.

#itsinthebag Drop Off Point

Share the Dignity Banner image

Share the Dignity Banner imageTrove is Proud to Support #itsinthebag

Trove is a drop off point, again this year, for Share The Dignity’s “It’s in the Bag” campaign between Saturday, 18th November and Saturday, 2nd December.

Through It’s in the Bag, Share the Dignity aims to make women in need feel special at Christmas time.

How does it work? Fill a handbag with the items listed as a starting point and drop it into Trove between 18th November and 2nd December. The bags are collected and delivered to homeless women – take a look at for further information.

“It’s In The Bag Christmas charity campaign idea came to us when we realised that women in crisis will put the needs of others before themselves, whatever the time of year.  And we wanted to do something that would give these women a little happiness at Christmas.

There are 85,000 homeless women who need your help this Christmas. Many have fled domestic violence or experienced extreme poverty. We want to make them feel special. You can help. It’s simple and it makes a big difference in a woman’s life.”

12322865_882408771880598_9090342774813607426_oWe had a huge response to this campaign when we were a drop off point last year and would love to make it an even better year this year. So, from Saturday 18th November to Saturday 2nd December grab an unwanted handbag and pop in some new and unopened goodies such as lotions, jewellery, a hair brush, personal care items, a movie voucher – whatever you believe will be appreciated. Please, however, no food, pharmaceuticals or sharps.

If you can only donate bags in good condition, or items to go inside the bags, then we can combine them to complete the bags.

For more ideas and information read more on Share the Dignity’s Christmas Charity page.  Follow Share the Dignity on Social media:

Look at the fresh honeycomb; the white on top of the honey is wax, called capping wax, that the bees use to seal the honeycomb cells once the water content of the honey has evaporated to 17-18%. This makes sure that the honey ferments in the comb, and will keep forever!! Very clever bees!

Meet Our Designers: Diilhami

Dilhami Profile Picture

Meet Our Designers is a regular feature. Each week one of Trove’s members is featured on our social media and here on our news pages. Follow Trove on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to stay up-to-date.

Trove’s Designers and Artists from the Canberra region and all their gorgeous products are handmade.

Dilhami Profile Picture

Please meet  Alli of Diilhami – soul-splashing art and inspiration:
Hi I’m Alli, an intuitive abstract artist. My art is called Diilhami. Art moves me so profoundly. Both in the creation of my own artworks and in juxtaposing it against the artwork of others. I love to question myself and my reality with art, but also to find peace and hope in my daily existence. I started my art journey three years ago, with a small collection of secondhand canvases, which I bravely painted over as an experiment; to find myself, to dive in, to just be. The process thrilled me so deeply that I continued; finding a new way to live and answer the questions held inside me for so long. Answers in a language not spoken; colours, lines, textures, images… my internal world, my earth through my eyes.

We asked her what she likes about Handmade products. Her answer sums it up so beautifully, we’re giving you a direct quote:

“There is something so deeply authentic and precious about personal, creative expression in the middle of a world inundated with plastic products made in China. The human soul craves the real, the authentic, the experience that will touch them to their core. A lot in our fast and impersonal world does not satisfy this deep need. Handmade products engender a little piece of the maker. A fluttering touch of the soul is given as a gift to the buyer, the receiver. How precious is that! Not fake, not plastic, not mass-produced… real, honest, beautiful, crafted with someone’s very own hands, from their heart… into our hands to touch our hearts.”

Alli gives us a little behind-the-scenes glimpse into her process. “I use a mix of glass paints, oil pastels and acrylic paints in my artworks. I allow the colours to choose their place and don’t ever think about what would look good or is the right colour to use next to others. I just dive in. I love the process, I find it exhilarating! I use brushes at times but most of the time when I start a new artwork, I work with my hands and fingers. I love forming the foundations with my own skin touching the new work area. My artworks are available as originals, custom commissions, high quality prints, art diaries, notebooks and beautiful greeting cards.”

Come in Trove to take home a piece of hope from Alli’s art. Please learn more about Diilhami on Trove’s Designer Profile page
